How to Relieve Colic Pain

Colic pain is something almost every newborn baby faces. They can bring a lot of stress for a parent because colic's seem pretty painful. Find out more about colic pain and how to relieve it.

Colic's usually affect babies in their first 3 to 4 months of life. The causes of colic's are still unknown, but it is believed that they might be caused by the digestive system or the babies sensitivity to the new environment. All these factors are just suppositions, they are not a certainty.

Even though the baby appears to be in severe pain because of his crying, scientists believe colic's are not due to pain. The reaction that babies have by pulling their knees close to the abdomen, turning their face red and crying severely can be very frustrating for parents.

Colic's are very common among newborn babies and they are not considered to be a serious condition since the babies weight gain and normal growth is not affected. Since the causes of colic's is unknown there isn't an effective treatment developed which can get rid of colic's permanently. There have been certain treatments which seem to help calm down the baby.

Here are some tips to prevent or help your baby calm during colic's:

  • Picking up the baby and laying him on your arms with his tummy resting on your arm can have a calming effect over the baby. The baby's position should be with his feet around either side of your arm, tummy resting on your arm and head resting on the palm of your hand. Secure the baby into position by holding him with your other hand and start walking around the house. The baby regularly stops crying and may eliminate gas.

  • Hold your baby into an upright position during feeding to reduce the intake of air the baby swallows during feeding.

  • Pat the babies back gently while holding him in an upright position to burp him. By burping the baby will eliminate the air he swallowed during feeding, making it less likely for him to develop gas.

  • Try switching to another brand of formula if the baby cries after every meal. It might not suit him and cause him gas.

  • Eliminate from your diet any foods that might transmit to the baby during breast feeding like cow milk. This link has not yet been proven but some scientists believe that there is a link between colic's and breastfeeding mothers who drink cow milk.

  • Try to distract the baby by turning on the vacuum or the washing machine. Babies seem to love the sound they make and may have a calming effect over them.

  • The best advice for parents who experience how frustrating colic's can be is to find help and support from family members. The babies crying can become overwhelming especially for mothers who find it difficult not to be able to sooth the baby, so get help from your closest relatives or friends if possible.
If your baby experiences weight loss or anything abnormal during colic's visit your pediatrician for advice and help.
